Another cracking game for Celtic on the road. They travelled to Deerpark to take on Mount Merrion Youths FC. It took only 10 minutes before we had the first goal, and it was another from Marcus Clinton who has the knack of scoring well and truly sussed. He got the ball on the left of the box and rifled home. 1-0 to the visitors. They say you are most vulnerable immediately after scoring, and so it proved again. MMYFC's Oscar Kelly broke forward within a minute and shot home past Niall Maloney in the Celtic goal. 1-1. The visitors restored their lead after 20 minutes when Dawide Nycz seized on a stray clearance and shot into the empty net. 2-1. 3 minutes later, Marcus unleashed another fine shot, but this time it was blocked. But he didn’t have to wait long for his second when he was set up by James Cremin, who had picked up the ball on the right wing. James swung the most exquisite of deBruyne-esque crosses into the path of Marcus and he took his goal with aplomb. Sadjo Barry increased Celtic’s lead just before the half time break when he exchanged passes with James before despatching his shot to the net. 4-1
In the second half, Andrew Maguire, having put in some fine crosses during the game, shot from 10 metres but his effort was just wide. Olly had to clear the danger as MMYFC threatened. Niall had to pull off some marvellous saves, one of which was caught on camera and must be a candidate for save of the month. Rhys McLoughlin was putting in strong tackles in his role in the middle of the park while combining with Sadjo and James in their forward roles.
After 13 minutes of the second half, MMYFC's Ben Lawton pulled one back and they threatened more damage but were kept at bay by the resilience of the Celtic rearguard. Marcus however restored the 3 goal advantage when he dispossessed the defender and slotted home from close range. Joe Martin popped up in the box and bundled the ball over the line late on for a rare goal. The last word went to MMYFC when Gavan Cooke scored with almost the last kick of the game. So it ended 6-3 for Celtic to set them up nicely for a strong finish to their league campaign.
It was a very satisfying day for Celtic with all of their squad playing their part. Niall was again commanding in goal for Celtic. At the back Ollie Moore was in fine form, supporting the midfield throughout. He took a knock in the second half which forced him to retire early from the game. The Balaban brothers, Sebastian and Kevin were again putting in a shift, while Joe Martin enjoyed switching from full back to midfield.
It will be back to training Monday at 6pm, though there is some doubt about this as Hurricane Ophelia is rumbling up the Atlantic as we speak. We will keep you informed.
