Castleknock Celtic 2 St Kevin's Boys 2
A beautiful evening in Porterstown, Castleknock welcomed the team from St Kevins Boys, an institution in Irish soccer, having international greats such as Robbie Brady & Jeff Hendrick as former players. The omens were not good for 14A1, a team on a poor run of results despite some hugely positive performances of late.
A cautious first half saw Celtic adapt to a 5 man defence and counter attacking style, that has been designed to compensate for the lack of a regular goalkeeper. It is a huge compliment to the deputees, Kacper Przepiorkiewicz, Alikhan Idrisov, & Ashraf Darfalla that we have managed to keep our goals conceded ratio down to 2.7 per game.
Whilst the 3 centre halfs Ashraf, Beni & Liam were able to repel the strong Kevins attack with ease, it allowed for the wide men Gavin Cameron & Cillian Dwyer to support the forward line of Weston Wandana, Jake Ngai & Ryan McCormick to create a number of chances that have proven hard to convert through lack of confidence in recent weeks. This remained the case until the introduction of Danny O'Mahony & Arron Murphy created a throughball for Weston, who struck an unstoppable half volley into the roof of the net to give Celtic a half time lead.
Kevin's central midfield general was spurred into action in the second half, created huge pressure on the midfield 3 of Alikhan, Finn Woodger & Danny. In turn, the two Celtic fullbacks were tested, forcing the introduction of Kevin Boateng & Arron Murphy to shore up the back 5. As Celtic were pushed deeper and deeper, Kevins finally found the break through with a cross from the right and neat headed finish to make it 1-1. Celtic worked harder to force a winner, the closest chance being a sweet left foot curler from Danny O'Mahony that just hit the side netting. All looked deadlocked until the last 5 minutes, when just like at the fixture in Whitehall earlier in the season, Kevins scored after a defensive mix up. Whilst the managers and onlooking parents’ heads dropped, not so the brave Celtic players. A decisive and intuitive throughball, straight from the restart found Weston in the box, with a bit of work to do, he beat the last man and rolled the ball into the bottom right hand corner. From heartbreak to euphoria for the Celtic lads and parents!
So, its only a draw, against a very good side, but a huge reward for a great group of players, who train hard, and never give up. It was great to see all the big smiles at the end, as we posed for pictures for our sponsor Aspira. Aspira run great projects through the provision of talented, hard working individuals. No-one can deny that this Celtic 14A1 side are any different.
