Man of the match performance by Paddy Dunne lays the foundation for victory for Celtic and a place in the last 16 of the Nivea Cup.
Celtic hosted Ballyogan FC in Porterstown Park in the last 32 of the AUL Nivea Cup. The home side got off to a good start when Kevin Keane finished a move he had started with the help of Ray Kelly. The lead lasted just a couple of minutes when Dave O’Hare struck. 1-1 at half time.
The sides remained level until 15 minutes into the second half when Aaron Byrne nudged the visitors in front. But with 15 minutes remaining, an exquisite ball from Steve O’Callaghan on the left side of midfield sent Kevin Keane free on the right wing, and the veteran Keane’s cross was met at the near post by Shane Dunne who forced the ball over the line. 2-2 at full time, which sent the game into extra time. While Shane was scoring the equalister, his brother Paddy had been making splendid stops in the Celtic goal.
There was still nothing separating the sides with 2 minutes left in extra time. Then Dave Costello got possession in the middle of the park and his through ball was chased down by Demi Dare who rifled home from 12 yards. It looked like the game was up for Ballyogan, but in the last attack of regulation time, Glen Horan raced up the park to get on the end of a cross after a defensive lapse to draw the sides level for the third time which set up the dreaded penalty shoot-out. more match action
Penalty Shoot-out: Celtic’s first penalty by Steve O’Callaghan was well saved, but Ballyogan failed to convert their spot kick when Paddy Dunne made a magnificent save from the Ballogan no. 8. Next up was the man for all seasons, John Byrne, and his penalty was dispatched with aplomb to put Celtic 1-0. Dave Costello, with a smashing shot, and Demi Dare both converted their penalties, and after Ballyogan’s fourth penalty was superbly stopped by Paddy at full stretch, it was down to Jamie Traynor to seal the deal when he shot low and hard to the keeper’s left and a place in the last 16 was booked for Celtic. While everyone rushed to congratulate Jamie on the final act of the game, it is Paddy Dunne who gets the main plaudits for his man of the match performance. more match action
