Celtic put a smile on everyones faces as HHFC put on the style with great event”
The Castleknock U12’s finally awoke from their Christmas slumber and headed to Huntstown Hartstown for the New Year Friendship Cup. All of the troops, save for Andrei (who had the dreaded flu) were in attendance and keen to dust the cobwebs off. And so we were off:
Game 1 – HHFC 1 -3 Castleknock Celtic
First game up was against the hosts, Huntstown Hartstown, and to everyones pleasant surprise Celtic looked like they were keen to continue where they left off in 2016. Pinging the ball round like old pro’s the Celts did everything but score. Catalin and Tara shot just wide, Luke hit the post before Tara blasted a shot against the crossbar following a wonderful piece of build up play. The star of the show was Abdullah who was putting on a dazzling display with his quick feet. A goal would come and with a minute of the half left we finally got the goal the game deserved from………………………Huntstown Hartstown with their first attack and shot of the game. If the goal was against the run of play no one could deny the pure quality of the freekick from the HH player. A stinger from 30 yards into the roof of the net. HT: 0-1.
HHFC were keen to build on their lead and Celtic had to work their way into the game before getting a deserved equaliser with Tara being the coolest person around as she slotted home. Minutes later it was 2-1 with Tara this time the provider for Esse to fire home. Tara rounded off a wonderful display with her second as Celtic ran out 3-1 winners against a gallant HHFC. FT: 1-3
Game 2 – Laytown 1 -0 Castleknock Celtic
Next up, after a 30 minute break were Laytown. Unlike the first game it was Celtic who were slow to start. They looked heavy legged and were immediately pinned back by a talented Laytown. The warning signs were there from the start with missed tackles all over the pitch. After 5 minutes Laytown took the lead as they were allowed to waltz through the Celtic finish before their winger finished in style. 1-0. For the rest of the half Laytown dominated a Celtic struggled to cope with the oppositions excellent movement. In truth Celtic were happy to reach half time only 1 down.
Changes were made and Celtic were galvanised. Tackles were being made, balls won and if we did not get the fluency of the first game we got the effort and heart that we can only applaud. We now had a game. Celtic were enjoying more possession and carrying the threat but could not find the final ball to secure an equaliser. As the clock ran down it was Laytown who came nearest to scoring forcing a fine save from Max in the final minute. FT: 1-0 and in truth Laytown were deserved winners.
Game 3 – Grange Woodbine 1 -2 Castleknock Celtic
No time to rest as Celtic were back in action against Grangewoodbine. The last word from the Coaches were “Forget the last game and remember how good you all are and all the good things you did in your first game”. Well the players had listened as they started the game like an Express train and it wasn’t long before they were won up. It started with a pass from the back by Conor with the final pass from the impressive Abdullah and who else was there to power home but Tara. 1-0. Immediately Celtic looked to build but Grange were having none of it as they worked their way back into the game. Grange won a free kick 18 yards out and upstepped their talented midfielder who curled the ball around the wall into the bottom corner. 1-1 and game on.
The next goal would be crucial and thankfully it fell to Celtic courtesy of a fine run and finish by Luke. 2-1 and in truth Celtic never looked back as they ran out deserved winners. 2-1.
And so ended a wonderful day of football. First of all A BIG THANK YOU to Huntsown Hartstown from all at Castleknock Celtic for a wonderful day of football and a well organised event. As Spock in Star Trek might say “Live long and prosper”. Closer to home let us say well done and thank you to all our Celts on duty – Max, Denys, Ryan, “Maccer”, Conor, Ben, James, Luke, Catalin, Abdullah, Tara and Esse – who gave us a day to remember.
