Castleknock Celtic’s Under-11D1 and 11E met in an end of term match for which bragging rights were at stake. Both teams are very familiar with each other having played together often on the same team. With the goal-scoring power in both teams, it was always going to be a shoot-out at Porterstown, as opposed to Gunfight at Ok Corral.
Ethan Hoey was at full stretch early on in response to a shot that went just wide. Soon after however it was Patrick O’Reilly who broke down the right before shooting home past Oisin Dunne from close range. 5 minutes later, Edward Nuzum was on target soon after being introduced. Next it was Sean Ogbomo who was wide with his effort. Oisin Dunne had to be alert to save, but he had no chance a couple of minutes later when Patrick got his second. Anthony Cooke was putting in a huge shift, regularly to be found at either end as the game swung from end to end. On one such occasion, he raced back into defence to prevent a certain goal. Marcus Clinton hit back for the D1 team just before half time to reduce the arrears, leaving it 3-1 at half time.
Within 4 minutes of the restart, Ethan Hoey after he had switched from goal stopper to his more usual role up front, scored his first. Edward hit his second within a minute. The D1 hit back again through Oisin Dunne, and a minute later Romeo Nweke struck his side’s third. Denis Diac had gone in goal and he took off a fine save as the game continued to ebb and flow. Ethan broke through 12 minutes into the half to score his second. He was clearly savouring his opportunity. Jerome Powell was going close at the other end, but soon after Oisin was emulating Ethan by converting from keeper to goalscorer. Only one goal between the sides now, and the challengers from the E-division were feeling the heat. However, Patrick who had been put back in defence took responsibility and raced forward before shooting home to complete his hat trick. Ethan followed suit as he bagged his third and his smile grew even wider. Sean got in on the act and shot low into the keeper’s left hand corner. It was 8-5 at this stage, but there was even more to come from the Celtic warrions from the D1 and E teams. Romeo matched Sean with a low drive to the net with 4 minutes remaining. It incited an immediate response and Patrick shot forward on the right hand side before crossing to the ubiquitous Anthony who drilled home from close range to cap a man of the match performance, though Ethan and Patrick were in close contention the man of the match award for their hat trick displays. Mirav Vaitha again demonstrated his fine touches, and on one occasion he put through a defence splitting pass that commentators rave about. Sam Kelly was in fine form with his tackling and distribution. Brierton was yet again showing a high level of consistency and is always in the 8 out of 10 performance category and a player you can always depend on, distributing well under pressure. Sean was his usual powerful force in the middle, driving forward regularly, and his display was capped with his fine goal. Patrick made a captain's contribution giving 100 per cent for his team, while Edward proved a real dynamo in the midfield. Well done to all.
15 goals in one game, and the spectators had been given huge entertainment for the hour on a murky morning in Porterstown, which is probably evident in the picture quality of photos. We will have to think about charging in to see these games !! more match action
