Knocklyon punish wasteful Celtic with two late strikes
Castleknock welcomed Knocklyon in their penultimate game on a beautiful crisp Saturday afternoon seeking to return to winning ways and seeking to put last Saturday's defeat behind them. To their credit Castleknock started brightly with the defensive four looking tight and solid. It was Celtic who created the best opportunities. With 10 minutes on the clock Lloyd Turner sprinted down the wing to fire in a low drive. Leigh Reilly had made the run but with the goal at his mercy from a yard out the ball bobbled as he struck it to unluckily shoot over the bar. Minutes later another fine move – Neto to Hughes, Hughes to Turner, Turner’s cross met on the volley by Reilly but deflected for a corner. Shortly after the talented Sean Blood who was a thorn in the Knocklyon defence all day went on one of his mazy runs past 3 players but his left footed shot drifted just wide. HT: 0-0.
The early part of the second half mirrored the first. Reilly forced a fine save from the keeper and moments later saw a shot from distance drift over. Knocklyon having weathered the storm grew in confidence and went in search of a goal. The signs were there as the Knocklyon No 4 waltzed through the Celtic defence before shooting wide. Would Celtic rue their missed opportunities? The answer was an emphatic YES as with 10 minutes left Knocklyon took the lead and again the No 4 did the damage and again he waltzed through before planting the ball into the bottom corner 0-1. Celtic were devastated and before they could regroup it was 2-0 when from 15 yards out a left footed volley scrambled into the corner. There was no time to regroup and in truth Knocklyon saw out the final minutes in relative comfort. FT: 0-2.
Well done to Knocklyon – they absorbed the best Celtic could throw at them and took their chances when they came and in the end justified their win. For Celtic it was “same ‘ol same ‘ol”. Not taking their chances, too predictable and making too many unforced errors. In most of their games this season they have had the majority of possession but not making it count. When you have a run like this confidence is naturally dented, in training every week we see the quality and potential - the Boys just need to transfer it on to the pitch on a Saturday. Guys, believe in yourself, continue working and it WILL happen. Onwards and upwards.
