Meath secure points against luckless Celtic with last gasp winner ”
Another week another top class fixture in this incredibly even Division. The Castleknock faithful certainly cannot complain about boredom or lack of quality. Another top clash as third place Castleknock visited fourth place Meath athletic who with games in hand on all the top three fancy their chances of a League & Cup double. Honours were even when these sides played earlier in the season although Meath’s form of late suggested this would be another tough test for the visiting Celts.
Meath like an express train with some slick passing, on the lovely All Weather Pitch, putting immediate pressure on Denys Yaskersy and Ryan Sherlock who thankfully were up to the task limiting Meath to long range efforts that were saved comfortably by keeper Max Ostaphchuk. Slowly but surely Celtic came into the game with Capt James Browne and Ben Forde taking control of the midfield. Chances were being created with Caitlin La Bont and Esse Okirikpo coming close but Meath’s defence, like Celtic’s, were in top form and more than once their defenders made some wonderful tackles. HT: 0-0.
The second half saw Celtic start the better and it was they who forced the pace. However, like the first half it was the defences who dominated with the closest to a goal being when the Meath midfielder drilled a shot low into the right hand corner only for Max to bring off a wonderful one handed save while at the other end Sherlock saw his excellent free kick beat the keeper but rattle the cross bar. As the game entered its final minutes Celtic lost their dominance and it was Meath who pushed forward. The last minute approached, Meath released the ball quickly down the right. The winger went down the line and drove the ball powerfully across the face of the goal. The ball struck a player and spilled into the net. A great cross but a freak goal and the game was over as the Ref blew the final whistle seconds later. FT: 0-1.
Celtic were devastated. For the second time against Meath they conceded in the dying seconds. Today Celtic did not deserve to lose but then again nor did Meath. Both teams gave their all with no quarter given or asked. Meath had the luck this time but over time Celtic will get theirs. Celtic have reason to be despondent following a great display against a very talented Meath outfit. A special mention to Denys whose form of late has been excellent and today he came up with a Man of the Match display. Well done Young Man and well done to our lads following a spirited performance.
