Johnny & Ed’s troops into Semi-finals of U-18s Ferrari Cup
The tie eventually got underway after some juggling with pitches in Porterstown Park as their playability was called into question.
It finally got underway and it was to was a rip-roaring cup tie. Celtic had done the double over their opponents, Shankill FC, but the result was to be in question right down to the final minute.
Shankill were competitive from the start and would have been disappointed by going behind 10 minutes into the game. The talented and speedy Lorcan Hill seized on the ball after Dammy Sodeke’s attempted header on goal fell to him. Lorcan let fly from 10 metres into the roof of the far corner. GOAL ! Despite much Shankill possession, the powerful Celtic right midfielder Manny Sodeke took his chance superbly when he raced in from the right to bury the ball in the far corner. GOAL ! 2-0.
Shankill hit back and went ahead 3-2 before the break, which bewildered some home supporters who thought this was going to be easy after going 2-0 ahead.
It was a real battle for Celtic in the second half as they chased the equaliser. Their reward finally came when Killian Ronan was too pacey for the visitors and was taken down in full flight. Christian Bowden never hesitated and he stepped forward to take the spot kick. His conversion was clinical to the left and out of the keeper’s reach. GOAL ! And so the game went to extra time.
It continued to flow from end to end, and the winner was in doubt to the end. As the final minutes approached, Celtic won a corner on the right. The ball was floated into the box and up rose the excellent Lloyd Carolan and he headed home to give the home side a place in the semi finals. GOAL !
It had been an excellent day’s work though the home fans were kept “on the edge of their seats.”
Jordan Bowden had been in dominant form at the back and he was ably partnered by Tameen Chaal. Mark Thornberry had worked his socks off from the off. However, man of the match was Lorcan Hill who gave it 100 per cent, but showed oodles of skill throughout. There are a couple of hurdles to be overcome before the fat lady sings !!
