Esker Celtic arrived at Porterstown full of confidence after beating the Celts 5-1 in the league last Monday evening.
On that occasion the sun was shining and Esker enjoyed a comfortable warm evening.Things turned out differently this time. Celtic took advantage of Esker's complacency from the off. It was the perfect opportunity for Brian Kennedy, Celtic's team manager and assistant coach Lorcan O'Malley to pull a few surprises for the visitors. The home team applied pressure high up the pitch, causing lots of problems for the visitors' defence with the pace of the front two. But Esker aren't league leaders for nothing and duly got their noses in front on 15 minutes with a deflected free kick finding their forward who finished well. The home team responded very well and deservedly equalized on the 20 mark. A good run and cross from Ahmed was turned in to an empty net by an Esker player. The goal gave Celtic the belief they could win this game and duly went ahead 5 minutes before half time, with Clinton rounding the keeper to finish.
But just before half time Esker were awarded a penalty. But Declan O'Malley saved brilliantly, indeed his pace off his line and distribution from the back today were outstanding throughout the game. After the break Celtic turnrd the screw and went further ahead when Abdul finished well after good link up play, and then repeated the trick 10 mins later after a quick free kick from Cormac - a great tip for any team as they caught the opposition off guard.
Esker pulled one back near the end but Celtic ran out deserved winners by 4 goals to 2 in this cup game. Not even the torrential rain could dampen the Celts spirits and as Esker discovered, the weather wasn't the only difference between the two games. Well done all - a great day's work.
