End to end game sees Celtic and Meath share the spoils
After a solid start to the season Celtic showed their Jeckyl & Hyde side in recent weeks – first a poor performance saw Ballyouster definitely secure a win before a wonderful display saw the lads turn in a 5 star display in beating table toppers Peamount Utd. Today Celtic would be tested by another top team as Meath Athletic made the long journey to Porterstown.
Meath hit the ground running and carved Celtic open in the first minute. Playing with a strong wind at their backs Meath sought to capitalise and created some good chances following solid build up play. Midway through the half Celtic made changes with Luke Hughes & James Browne bolstering midfield. This stemmed the tide but Meath still looked threatening. A goal would come but the surprise was it was from Celtic. Esse Okirikpo burst forward , around his marker, around the keeper before touching home. 1-0 and relief. More than relief there was belief as Celtic upped their game to see out the half. Ht: 1-0
Playing with the wind it was Castleknock who looked the stronger and with 10 minutes on the clock it was 2-0. Browne played the ball forward to Catalin La Bont who lifted the ball over the keeper with another classy finish by the youngster. Celtic were on top but to their credit Meath continued to play football and with 12 minutes left got their reward when their striker made it 1-2. Game on. Meath continued to press with their players running at the opposition contrasting with Celtic seeking to play the early ball out wide. Celtic thought they had secured the points when following a great passing move involving Okirikpo, LaBont and Andre Ungareanu, Abdullah Boujerdha saw his shot beat the keeper but crash against the cross bat. As we entered the last minute Meath won a free kick in their own half. The defender launched the ball into the box as the Celtic defence went to sleep ball watching but not so the Meath players. The ball was squared into the box and their striker finished from 6 yards out. 2-2. There was no time for a winner from either team as the Ref blew time up. FT: 2-2
Celtic will be disappointed that having been two up with 12 minutes remaining that they let the game slip but on the other hand after 15 minutes into the game would gladly have taken a draw such was the quality of this Meath team. All in all a fair result. For Celtic this was far from being their best performance but once again showed good character when not playing their best. After a busy 3 weeks consistency of performance is what the Celts require so it will be back to the training ground as the team seeks to continue their development.
