Celtic impress with top class performance as formbook thrown out the window
After a solid start to the season Castleknock came unstuck thanks mainly to a lazy performance by the Celts something that has not happened before. When that happens the last thing you want is to face League Leaders and accomplished performers Peamount who boasted a 100% record to date. Still, sometimes that’s what you need - the challenge of playing the best. Today what the Coaches wanted more than anything was a performance the players could be proud of. Do that every week and over a season results will take care of themselves.
On a beautiful pitch the game kicked off in sunshine. Playing into a strong wind Celtic were immediately under pressure with the defence looking a little nervy. Peamount had 3 corners in the first 5 minutes which were thankfully dealt with. As the half wore on Celtic steadied the ship – Messrs Sherlock and Yaskersky were now more assured while Luke Hughes & James Browne in midfield were starting to dominate. Still midway through the half and the game scoreless Celtic made changes. Esse Okirikpo and Tara O’ Hanlon came on. Immediately it spiced up the game. Indeed we nearly saw goal of the season – Abdallah to Esse to Abdallah to James to Esse, a cross and Ryan Mc connects but his shot just over the bar. Not a goal but what a move and with it came confidence. Minutes later Andre and Luke were involved before Esse powered over a cross where Tara powered in at the back post. 0-1. Celtic had confidence now they had belief. HT: 0-1
At half time the Coaches complemented their teams efforts but cautioned against complacency. From the off Celtic pushed. Chances came – Esse hit the post, Tara just failed to touch home Luke’s cross, ditto from James corner then James hit the post . The next goal was critical. Celtic pushed. Andre played in James, he turned, he shot , it hit’s the post but thankfully it goes over the line. 0-2. Peamount were rocked. Abdallah nearly made it three but his shot went just wide. To their credit Peamount never gave up as they pushed to get back in the game. Ryan Sherlock and Ben Forde needed to be strong and they were as they limited Peamount to have chances. Indeed the nearest that Peamount came to a goal was a lovely free kick that forced Max Ostapchuk into a fine save. FT: 0-2
The Celts were elated and why not as its not often that you beat the unbeaten league leaders who had not lost in 12 months but also to keep them scoreless. What’s more Castleknock were deserved winners with all 13 Celts playing their part. But before we get carried away let us say that Peamount are deserved league leaders. Today Celtic surprised them and caught them cold. The Peamount Boys are talented and will be keen to ensure that lighting does not strike twice when the teams meet again. However to-day is to-day and the Celts should enjoy it. The Coaches were thrilled – they had asked for a performance and that is what they got as their charges put their indifferent display from last week behind them but as Big Ben said “lads, let’s play like this every week”. And so say all of us. Well done everyone, enjoy the weekend and make sure your Mum’s and Dad’s buy you a treat!!! And that’s an order from the Coaches.
