Everyone seemed resigned to extra time in this Nivea for Men Cup Quarter Final in Porterstown Park on a bitterly cold but bright late April evening. Fair play to the supporters who came out to cheer on the Premier B team who had seen victory snatched from them in the league the previous Sunday against the same team who sit at the top of the league table. The spectators seemed to be suffering from brass monkeys syndrome having persevered with the contest for 89 minutes in a game that was very much a case of 'after the Lord Mayor's Show'. We were licking our lips after last Sunday’s 8 goal extravaganza, but alas, it was pure anticlimax.
While Castleknock had a couple of great chances in the first half, after the break, it was Howth who dominated possession. They fluffed their lines on a number of occasions with brave tackling being required in the Celtic defence, where John Byrne put in a man of the match performance and Paddy Dunne was faultless between the sticks.
Kevin Keane was again influential in the middle with Joey Crampton, while Conor Stephenson was his usual Mr Cool. Killian Zambra had been brought in for the final quarter and he added fresh legs to the Celtic attack. He was unlucky when he was taken down 25 yards out from goal, and the ref waved play-on. It was however Conor who deftly delivered the sublime ball to the wide man on the right with 90 seconds remaining that sent Ray Kelly free of the full back and one on one with the keeper. Rolling back the years, Ray gave the keeper the eyes as he placed his shot into the far corner off the foot of the post. see goal. The goal was greeted by great applause by the home crowd, but also by an equal measure of relief as the spectators suffering from rigour mortis would not have been able to withstand the cold for another half hour. And so Castleknock had gained revenge for the 2 points being snatched from them in the previous Sunday’s league game. They now look forward to a semi final game early in May against old rivals Real Transylvania, while the chase for the league title continues.
