With half the squad unavailable, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Castleknock hoops in this away tie against Booth Road Celtic. Ethan Hoey captained the team and he was to have a very influential game, leading the attack in the first half before taking over in the centre of the defence after the break.
Castleknock started competitively and could have taken the lead 5 minutes in, but the ball drifted just wide. However after 7 minutes it was the home side who broke the deadlock. Anthony Cooke went within a whisker of getting the equaliser but the home keeper made a splendid save. Within 6 minutes, Booth Road had stretched their lead to 3-0. The scoreline however did not reflect the effort that Castleknock were putting in. In a 9 minute period, Ethan Hoey, Michael Kelly and Anthony Cooke (twice) went close but the home keeper was in brilliant form.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Castleknock take the game to Booth Road. The visitors won a corner on the right. Michael Kelly swung it in, and it was Ethan Hoey who lined up his shot and rifled in from 10 metres. (goal). 15 minutes into the half, Booth Road restored their 3 goal lead. The following minute, Michael Kelly burst through to raise the visitors’ spirits with his goal strike. (goal). It was a thrill a minute during this spell, and it was Booth Road who next had their chance to score when they were awarded a penalty. Up stepped the striker who blasted the ball goalward but keeper Daniel Cryan stood firm and stopped the shot brilliantly. (save). A minute later, it was action at the other end, with Michael Kelly getting his second. Sean Ogbomo was now leading the line, and he made a succession of forays forward but alas it was not his day as his efforts went just wide of the posts.
In the defence, Oliver Moore and Denis Diac were immense, and when they were joined by Ethan Hoey, they looked impregnable. Ethan reminded the reporter of Ron Yeats who was known as the Colossus (get your google-search working on that one). It was a marvellous game for the spectators and the players seemed to enjoy it too. Castleknock were exhausted at the end after they had given every ounce of energy in their attempt to get back to parity, but Booth Road ran out 5-3 winners. The only surprise was the result which could easily have been 10-10 given the amount of chances that each side had. So it is back to training on Monday at 6pm in Porterstown.
