Celtic’s U-11D hosted St John Bosco in Porterstown and had prepared midweek to get their league campaign off the mark after the reverse in their opening game away to Booth Road Celtic. Preparations were severely dented with players taking a break for the St Patrick’s weekend and sickness. Team squads had to be juggled to ensure fixtures were fulfilled, and it ended up with teams taking to the field with the minimum panel of 7 and no substitutes.
So it was the magnificent 7 who took to the field. Cillian Garvey, who had put in a fine performance in his debut game for Celtic last week as a defender, took over as goalkeeper and he excelled in this role. He made a succession of vital saves throughout the game to deny Bosco who went close to scoring on innumerable occasions, one time crashing the ball off the crossbar. At that stage Celtic were living a charmed life as the visitors went within a whisker of scoring. It was Celtic who took an early lead however when Oisin Dunne got possession in his own half and raced the length of the field, beating midfielders and defenders alike before shooting. While the goal had a bit of good fortune attached to it as it rebounded off the keeper onto Oisin and into the net, the Celtic midfielder very much deserved it for his huge endeavour to score. 6 minutes later, it was Oleg Sinkevics who was the creator as his wicked corner went into the Bosco net off a defender, but goal must go to the Celtic frontman. Oleg was again involved when Celtic got their third as the ball went in off a defender, but Oleg’s name was on this one as well. It was an amazing scoreline as Celtic seemed to score every time they shot at goal in that first half, while Bosco had no luck at all. They did pull one back before the break with a fine goal that gave Cillian no chance.
The second half was equally exciting as the play flowed from end to end. Rei Mulligan was covering every blade of grass, linking up between defence and attack. He was unlucky on occasions not to get his shot on target, but the goals will come for him in the future as he gets familiar with his team mates. Tomas Abramowski and Romeo Nweke were magnificent in the defensive third, but both ventured forward when the opportunity arose. Romeo was masterful in his recovering when Bosco broke forward and seldom was he second best in the challenges, which earned him the man of the match award. Oisin was putting in a huge shift as he was found threatening in attack, but battled back umpteen times to prevent Bosco getting attacks going. Markus Clinton was himself having a great game as he worked his socks off and he showed his football skills as he was quick to exploit an opportunity with incisive passing. Oleg got his third to complete his hat trick early in the second half after an amazing piece of play involving Tomas and Romeo, but the strike from Oleg was superb into the far corner. Oisin went very close a couple of minutes later after another fantastic move, involving Tomas and Oleg who delivered a sublime pass from left to right. We were indeed treated to some very fine football today, and given that they are only together a few weeks, things can only get better when they have their full squad together. Training on Monday at 6pm, venue will be notified tomorrow.
